When asked what inspired their work, this is what the young artists shared.

Grace Nam

" I decided to submit this piece for my food waste prevention art submission because I believe it captures the pleasant experience and small joys of saving food for later. I wanted to express that although the event the cake was for is over and it’s no longer on a fancy platter, it’s still a very good cake that can be saved to be enjoyed in small increments later. My family always taught me to value food and always finish what was on my plate, and it’s still very important to me in every meal. Combined with my growing interest and concern for the environment, my values drove me to participate in this opportunity with my passion in art."

Gloria Hu

"Whenever I bring a new dish into my lunch, I always get questions about what I’m eating. The answer usually comes with an explanation of other things- my culture, my family, my lifestyle. People don’t realize that when they ask about my food, they are also asking about who I am. To me, food is a window that others can use to look at my life. It is an irreplaceable form of my identity. I hope that when people throw away food, they realize that they are throwing away the love and story behind it as well."

Cecil Le Pabic

"I wanted to make a piece highlighting other countries food and culture as well as what they valued in it. Like India's spicy dishes or Frances sweet desserts. I feel that it is important to see other countries perspectives on food, because it is always good to see what they see to try and come together to save our planet and food supply."

Ariana Johnson

"I was inspired to develop this artwork because, to me food is a way to express yourself through creativity or passion for something that you love. My artwork relates to this because, it depicts how inventive meals are shown through people despite the thoughts and opinions of others. This is why food waste prevention is so important to me, when you waste food, you waste a chance for visual expression and representation of people."

Ana Zapata

"I created this expression because I can leave a message to children to take care of the earth and food. This is important because without food we can't live."
